A roaring un-success?

I've tried quite a few of BOSH's recipes since becoming pescatarian. It seems as though everyone in the pescatarian/vegetarian/vegan world has heard of these boys, and I've been recommended their book too many times to count. Honestly, my experience has been a mixture of successes and failures.

Making their pizza dough over FaceTime with my cousin was super fun and entertaining, and I used their recipe for a tomato base which was delicious. But their paella was bland and tasteless which is what I have found with some of their other recipes. I know that being vegan must be hard to try and supplement other flavours such as meat and cheese, but there must be better recipes for hummus than this.

I chose the Roasted Garlic Hummus because I thought it would be packed with flavour. I was wrong. The chickpeas were overwhelming and the whole thing was really was missing something.

While it was unbelievably easy to make (roast garlic and then throw everything in a blender), I was disappointed with the end result. I even differed from the recipe and blended my chives into the hummus because I thought that it would add more flavour, which it didn't.

I determined that it was missing something citrusy or even spicy, so I added more lemon after tasting, even throwing in some chilli flakes, paprika, salt and pepper. After adding obscene amounts of each and only just starting to actually taste something, I gave up (you can see this attempt in the second picture below, the first is the original hummus). After 1 day in the fridge, my revitalisation attempt seemed to have paid off, and it was quite nice. You could tease the chickpeas less and I think that the original recipe probably used too many anyway (I did notice that it made A LOT of hummus).

I'll definitely be working on my own recipe or consulting some others to see if I can make an improved version. I really love hummus so this was a real shame, but let's see what I whip up in the future. I'll be sure to share!

Overall:

Easy to Make - Yes

Time taken - The garlic takes 35 minutes in the oven. Prepare all of the other ingredients in the meantime and then just whizz in a food processor. 45 minutes from start to finish

Taste - Tasteless in flavour and an overwhelming amount of chickpeas

See my totally unfiltered, candid pictures for the recipe and enjoy (or not)!
